In 1979, while swimming in the sea in Brazil, Mengele suffered a stroke ad drowned. Mengele was buried in Embu das Artes under the alias “Wolfgang Gerhard.” Meanwhile, numerous Mengele sightings were reported in all corners of the world. These false sightings were mainly due to the fact that there was a $100,000 reward for his capture. After such a reward was presented, worldwide interest in the case skyrocketed. In February 1985 in Jerusalem a mock trial featuring the testimony of over a hundred victims of Mengele’s experiments were presented. After the mock trial the governments of West Germany, Israel, and the United States together coordinated an effort whose goal was to solve the mystery of Mengele’s whereabouts. In 1985, the location of Mengele’s remains was retreated. On June 6th, 1985 the remains were exhumed. After much forensic examination, the remains, with a high degree of probability proved to be Mengele’s body. In 1992, DNA testing verified Mengele’s identity. Today the remains remain stored at the Sao Paulo Institute for Forensic Medicine.
